Terms of Use

These terms are the agreement between you and Setlyr Limited for the Setlyr app and this website. They cover what you can expect from us, what we expect from you, and how subscriptions work. We have written them in plain English — where a sentence is doing legal work, we have tried to say so rather than bury it.

By creating an account or using Setlyr, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use Setlyr.

1. Who we are

Setlyr Limited (company number 17305710, registered in England and Wales), registered office 238 Wednesbury Road, Walsall, WS2 9QN, England. In these terms, "we", "us" and "Setlyr" mean Setlyr Limited; "you" means you, the person using Setlyr. You can reach us any time at hello@setlyr.com.

2. The short version

3. Your account

You need an account to use Setlyr. To create one you must be at least 16 years old and give us an email address you control. Keep your password to yourself — you are responsible for what happens under your account, unless someone gets in through a failure on our side.

One account is for one person. Please do not share your login so other people can use your subscription; that is what the store's own family-sharing features are for, where they are available.

You can delete your account at any time from inside the app — open Settings and tap "Delete my account". Your account and the data attached to it are removed from our live systems straight away. If you cannot sign in, email hello@setlyr.com with the subject "Delete my account" from the address you signed up with and we will do it for you.

Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. See section 7.

4. What Setlyr is — and what it is not

Setlyr is a guide. We research and write about how things work in the UK — the NHS, banking, visas, housing, work, tax, everyday life — and we keep it as current and accurate as we reasonably can. All of it is written by us; we do not copy content from anywhere else.

What Setlyr is not:

Immigration

This one matters, so we are spelling it out. Setlyr gives general information about how UK immigration processes work. We are not regulated by the Immigration Advice Authority (IAA) and we do not give immigration advice.

That means we do not tell you whether you qualify for a visa, which route you should apply under, how likely an application is to succeed, or what to do about your particular case. Your Setlyr plan is assembled by filtering a fixed library of general steps against the broad visa category you selected. It is not built around your individual circumstances, it is not a recommendation, and it should not be read as one.

If you need advice about your own situation, speak to a solicitor or an IAA-authorised adviser. You can find one through the register at gov.uk/find-an-immigration-adviser.

Money, credit and insurance

Setlyr covers bank accounts, credit and loans, mortgages, savings and ISAs, pensions, insurance and tax. All of it is general, factual information about how these things work in the UK. None of it is financial advice.

Setlyr is not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. We do not advise on, arrange, broker or introduce any financial product. We do not assess what is suitable for you or your circumstances. We are not a credit broker, a mortgage adviser, an insurance intermediary, an investment adviser or a debt adviser, and nothing in Setlyr should be treated as any of those things.

Where we name a bank, lender, insurer or other provider, that is editorial information, not a personal recommendation, and nobody pays to be there. Setlyr is independent: we take no sponsorship, commission or affiliate fees from any provider we mention.

For decisions about borrowing, mortgages, pensions, investments or insurance, speak to an FCA-authorised adviser, and check any firm on the Financial Services Register at register.fca.org.uk. For free, independent help with money or debt, MoneyHelper and Citizens Advice are good places to start.

Tax. What we write about income tax, National Insurance, VAT, council tax, stamp duty, capital gains and inheritance tax is general information, not tax advice. Your own position may be different, and tax rules change. Check HMRC or a qualified accountant before you act on anything.

Health

Setlyr explains how the NHS works — registering with a GP, what a pharmacy can help with, how prescriptions and charges work, what to expect from maternity care, how to get help for your children. That is navigational information, not medical advice. Nothing in Setlyr is a diagnosis, a treatment recommendation, or guidance on medicines for you personally. Where we name a medicine or a service, it is to help you recognise it, not to suggest you should use it.

For anything about your own health or your family's, speak to a pharmacist, your GP, or NHS 111. In an emergency, call 999.

Legal matters, work and housing rights

Setlyr explains how UK law and everyday rights work — as a tenant, at work, as a consumer, and when dealing with the police, the courts or an ombudsman. That is general legal information, not legal advice. We are not a firm of solicitors, we are not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and we do not act for you, conduct litigation, handle probate, or carry out any other reserved legal activity.

The law differs between England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the outcome of any dispute turns on its own facts and its own deadlines. For your own situation, speak to a solicitor, Citizens Advice, or the relevant tribunal or ombudsman.

Difficult moments

Some of what Setlyr covers is hard going — mental health, abuse, bereavement, pregnancy loss, loneliness. We write about it because people settling in a new country deal with all of it, often without the network they would have had at home.

What we offer is orientation and signposting: where to go, who to call, what to expect. It is not counselling, therapy or crisis support, and it is no substitute for talking to someone qualified.

If you are struggling, please talk to someone rather than reading about it:

James AI

Setlyr includes a feature called James AI, which helps you search and navigate Setlyr's own content and points you to the right guide or step. Its answers are assembled automatically from material inside Setlyr and can be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Treat it as a starting point, not a final answer, and apply the same care as with the rest of the app. Everything above about immigration, money and health applies to James AI in full.

If we later connect James AI to a generative AI service, its answers will be produced automatically by that service. We will make clear in the app that you are interacting with an AI, and we will update these terms and our Privacy Policy before we make that change.

Links to other places

The app links out to third-party websites and services (GOV.UK, the NHS, banks, and so on). We do not control them and are not responsible for their content, and a link is not an endorsement.

5. Free and Premium

Setlyr has two tiers:

Exactly which parts sit in each tier is shown in the app, and we may change it over time as we add and reorganise content. If we move something out of the free tier that you were relying on, that does not change what you have paid for: an active Premium subscription always gives you the full Premium experience for the period you have paid for.

Some people have access through an access code we have issued (for example, testers or partners). A code gives you Premium access for as long as the code stays valid; we can deactivate a code if it has been shared beyond its intended use or the arrangement it was issued under ends. Codes have no cash value.

6. Subscriptions, prices and renewal

Premium is an auto-renewing subscription, available as a monthly or a yearly plan.

Free trials and introductory offers

We sometimes offer a free or discounted introductory period — for example, the free months offered to waitlist members. These are delivered as introductory offers through the App Store and Google Play, on the same terms on both. Unless the offer says otherwise: it is one per person, it converts into a normal paid subscription at the end unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, and taking a paid subscription during a free period forfeits the unused part of it. Eligibility for store introductory offers is determined by Apple and Google against your store account; we also check that each Setlyr account only takes one. The store shows you when the trial ends and what you will be charged.

7. Cancelling

You can cancel at any time, and you keep Premium until the end of the period you have already paid for. Cancel in the store, not in the app — we cannot cancel a subscription for you, because we do not hold it:

Deleting the app, or deleting your Setlyr account, does not cancel your subscription. Cancel it in the store first, or you will keep being billed.

8. Refunds and your cancellation rights

Because Apple and Google take the payment, they handle refunds under their own policies — Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, Google through your Google Play account. If a store declines and you think that is unfair, email us at hello@setlyr.com: we cannot reverse a charge we never received, but we will take it up with the store on your behalf.

If you are a consumer in the UK or the EU, you have a 14-day right to cancel a purchase of digital content. That right ends early only if you have expressly consented to the content being supplied immediately and acknowledged that you would lose the right by doing so.

So, plainly: if you are within 14 days of buying and you have not been asked to give that consent, the right applies. Email us at hello@setlyr.com and we will help you claim a refund through the store.

None of this affects your separate legal rights if the content is faulty, not as described, or not of satisfactory quality.

9. What you agree not to do

Setlyr is for your own personal use. Please do not:

If you break these rules we may suspend or close your account. Where it is fair and practical to do so, we will warn you first and give you a chance to put it right. If we close a paid account for a serious breach, we may end your access without further access for the remaining period; refunds in that case are a matter for the store.

10. Our content, and what you are allowed to do with it

Everything in Setlyr — the writing, the guides, the design, the illustrations, the name and the logo — belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by copyright and trade mark law. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the app and read its content on devices you own or control, for as long as your account is open and within the tier you are on.

Obviously fine, and always was: reading it, taking notes, quoting a line to a friend, following the steps in your own life.

Anything you put into Setlyr — your profile, your plan, your Cost Planner numbers — stays yours. We only use it to run the service for you, as described in our Privacy Policy. If you send us feedback or a suggestion, we may act on it and build it without owing you anything for it, which we hope reads as an invitation rather than a warning.

11. Changes to the app, and ending this agreement

We will keep improving Setlyr, which means features will change and content will be added, rewritten and occasionally retired. We may need to suspend the service temporarily for maintenance or to fix something.

If we decide to discontinue Setlyr altogether, we will give you reasonable notice by email. Where we can, you will keep Premium access until the end of the period you have already paid for. Because Apple and Google are the seller and hold the payment, we cannot process a refund ourselves — but we will support any refund request you make to them, and this does not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.

You can end this agreement whenever you like by cancelling your subscription and deleting your account.

12. Our responsibility to you

We take real care over Setlyr, but we cannot promise the app will always be available, uninterrupted or completely free of errors.

If we fail to meet these terms, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breach — but not for loss that is not foreseeable, and not for business losses (Setlyr is for personal use; if you use it for a business, we are not liable for lost profits, lost business or lost opportunity).

Subject to the paragraph below, our total liability to you for all claims connected with Setlyr is limited to the greater of £100 and the total amount paid for your Setlyr subscription in the 12 months before the claim arose. We think that is a fair limit for a low-cost information service, and we have set out plainly above what Setlyr is and is not so that you can judge for yourself what to rely on it for.

We do not exclude or limit our liability in any way where it would be unlawful to do so — including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or under your statutory rights as a consumer for services supplied with reasonable care and skill and digital content that is of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. The limit above does not apply to any of those.

Because Setlyr is information rather than advice, decisions you take after reading it remain yours — please read section 4 as the practical version of this paragraph, and check official sources before anything expensive or irreversible.

13. Business and institutional use

These terms are for individual consumers using Setlyr personally. If you are a university, employer or other organisation and you would like to provide Setlyr to your students or staff, that is a separate agreement on different terms — email hello@setlyr.com and we will talk it through.

14. Additional terms for the iOS app

If you downloaded Setlyr from the Apple App Store, the following applies in addition to everything above, and prevails over anything inconsistent with it:

15. Additional terms for the Android app

If you downloaded Setlyr from Google Play, your use is also subject to the Google Play Terms of Service, and to Google's own terms for payments and subscriptions. Google is the seller for your purchase, handles billing and refunds, and is not a party to this agreement. We — not Google — are responsible for the Setlyr app, its content, and any support you need with it.

16. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms — for example, if we change how subscriptions work or add a new feature that needs covering. The "last updated" date at the top always tells you the current version. If a change is material and affects you, we will email you before it takes effect, and you will be free to cancel if you do not accept it. Changes never apply retroactively to a subscription period you have already paid for.

17. Complaints, law and courts

If something has gone wrong, please email hello@setlyr.com first — we read everything and we would much rather fix it than argue about it.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes can be brought in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your own courts.

If you are a consumer resident outside England and Wales, nothing here deprives you of the protection of the mandatory consumer law of the country you live in, or of your right to bring proceedings there.

If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
