On this page

1. Getting started

Download Setlyr from the App Store or Google Play, then create an account with your email address and a password (at least 6 characters). If we ask you to confirm your email, tap the link in the message we send — check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive within a few minutes — and then sign in.

The first time you open Setlyr, we ask a handful of quick questions: your first name, where you're coming from, where you are in your move (still planning, just arrived, getting settled, or putting down roots), when you arrive(d), which city or area you're in, what kind of visa brought you here, and what you need help with.

Your answers shape the app around you — which stage of your plan opens first, which visa notes get highlighted inside guides, and the starting figures in the Cost Planner. None of it is set in stone: you can change every answer later in My Profile (see section 9), so answer with your best guess and move on. You can also skip the setup entirely and personalise later.

2. Finding your way around

Setlyr has four tabs along the bottom:

The gear icon in the top-right corner opens your profile and settings from anywhere in the app.

3. My Plan

My Plan is your settling-in journey broken into stages — from before you arrive through to long-term plans. Tap a stage at the top to see its tasks; a small coloured dot on a stage means something in it needs attention.

Ticking things off. Tap the round checkbox next to a task when it's done. Each task carries a badge — Do this now, This week, Coming up or Done — so you always know what deserves attention first. Tasks with an attached walkthrough show a Step-by-step pill; tap the card to open the guide.

Making it yours:

Your overall progress shows on the For you tab, along with the next task we'd suggest tackling.

4. Discover

Discover is the whole library in two tabs:

Search works across both tabs from the same field, and it looks inside the content — not just titles — so you can search the way you'd say it ("doctor" finds GP topics, "flat" finds housing). Typos are forgiven. A small badge on each tab shows how many results are waiting there, so nothing hides in the tab you're not on.

5. Reading a topic

A topic opens like a small book. The first page is an overview: what's inside, how long it takes to read, quick-reference cards (key words, local context, etiquette), a contents list you can tap to jump straight to any page, and the step-by-step guides that belong to the topic.

Swipe or use Next and Back to turn pages — the counter at the bottom shows where you are. Tap the bookmark in the top bar to save the topic for later.

You don't need to finish in one sitting: Setlyr remembers your page, and the topic appears under Pick up where you left off on the For you tab, ready to resume exactly where you stopped.

6. Step-by-step guides

Step-by-step guides (you'll sometimes see them called processes — same thing) are follow-along walkthroughs for the big admin tasks. You can open one from Discover, from a task on My Plan, from inside a topic, from Saved, or from the For you tab if you've already started it.

At the top of every guide you'll see two honest numbers: time on task (how long you'll actively spend) and admin wait (how long the system takes after you've done your part). Where a task works differently by visa route, the guide shows the variations — with your visa highlighted, based on your profile.

Working through it. Tap the numbered circle next to a step to mark it done — tap again to untick. The progress bar tracks how far you've got, your progress is saved automatically, and guides you've started appear on the For you tab so you can carry on any time. At the end of each guide, an If something goes wrong section covers the common snags.

7. The Cost Planner

The Cost Planner gives you a realistic picture of what your life in the UK will cost. You'll find it at the bottom of the For you tab. It walks you through four short steps:

  1. You — pick the closest fit (professional, student or family) and we pre-fill sensible defaults; then set your household, where in the UK you'll be, and your salary.
  2. Monthly — your housing setup, bills, transport, lifestyle and family costs. The running total updates live as you adjust.
  3. Visa — your visa route and duration, plus upfront costs: application fees, the health surcharge, deposits, flights and moving costs.
  4. Summary — your take-home pay after tax, your monthly breakdown, what's left over, and the upfront cash you'll need before you arrive. Use the quick switches to test what-ifs (a cheaper area, a flat share, losing the car) and drag the sliders to fine-tune flexible spending.

A few things worth knowing:

8. Saved

Tap the bookmark on any topic or guide — on its cover, or in the top corner once it's open — and it lands in the Saved tab, split into saved topics and saved processes, each showing your reading or step progress. To remove something, just tap its bookmark again.

9. Your profile & account

Changing your answers

Open the gear icon → My Profile (or tap any of the profile chips at the top of My Plan). You can change your name, country, stage of the move, city, visa, arrival date and situation toggles at any time — the app adjusts around the new answers.

Your data, on all your devices

Your plan, progress, bookmarks, reading positions and Cost Planner sync to your account automatically. Sign in on a new phone and it's all there. Working offline is fine too — once content has loaded, you can browse and tick things off without a connection, and it syncs when you're back online.

Starting over

Settings → Clear all progress resets every ticked task, every guide step, and your saved items — but keeps your account and profile. It can't be undone, so the app asks you twice. (The Cost Planner has its own Reset, inside the planner.)

Signing out

Settings → Sign out signs you out and removes your data from that device. Your account keeps everything — it all comes back when you sign in again.

Deleting your account

Open Settings → Delete my account. You'll be asked to type DELETE to confirm, and then your account and everything attached to it is deleted immediately and permanently. If you'd rather we do it — or you can no longer sign in — email hello@setlyr.com with the subject "Delete my account" from the address you signed up with, and we'll take care of it within 30 days. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.

Important: deleting your account does not cancel a subscription — cancel it in the store first (see section 10), or the store will keep billing you.

10. Subscriptions & billing

Setlyr has a free tier — which includes the Cost Planner — and a Premium subscription that unlocks the rest. Subscriptions are bought through, billed by and managed in the App Store or Google Play — we never see your payment details, and we can't change or cancel a subscription for you, because we don't hold it.

Cancelling

Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date to avoid the next charge. You keep Premium until the end of the period you've paid for. Deleting the app — or deleting your account — does not cancel a subscription.

Refunds

Because Apple or Google took the payment, refunds go through them: Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, Google via Google Play. If a store turns you down and you think that's unfair, email us — we can't reverse a charge we never received, but we will take it up with the store on your behalf.

Access codes

If we've given you an access code (for example as a tester or partner), follow the instructions that came with it. If a code isn't working, email us and we'll sort it out.

The full details — renewals, price changes, free trials, founder pricing — are in our Terms of Use.

11. Common questions

The app says "Could not load content"

Setlyr needs an internet connection the first time it loads its content. Check your connection and tap Try again. After that first load, the content is stored on your device and the app works offline.

I never got my confirmation email

Check your spam or junk folder, and make sure you typed the address you meant to. Still nothing? Email us from that address and we'll get you in.

I can't sign in

Double-check your email and password. If you're still locked out, email hello@setlyr.com from your sign-up address and we'll help you back in.

My progress has disappeared

Your progress lives in your account, not on the device — so first check you're signed in with the same email you used before. Signing out removes the local copy from a device, but signing back in restores everything.

My plan's stage looks empty, or a guide says "coming soon"

Some steps only appear when they apply to you — check the My situation toggles on My Plan and switch on the ones that fit. "Coming soon" means that guide isn't published yet; we add and update content regularly, so it's worth checking back.

The Cost Planner's numbers don't match my reality

They're not meant to be gospel — they're honest estimates from typical UK prices, meant as a starting point. Every figure can be overridden with your own numbers, and the totals recalculate as you type.

Is Setlyr advice?

No. Setlyr is here to help you settle in, not to give legal, medical, financial or immigration advice. Rules and prices change — always double-check official sources like GOV.UK, the NHS or HMRC before making big decisions. More in our Terms of Use.

Something in the app is wrong or out of date

Tell us! Accuracy is the whole point of Setlyr. Email hello@setlyr.com with what you spotted and we'll fix it quickly — and be grateful.

12. Contact us

For anything this page doesn't cover — questions, problems, feedback, ideas — email hello@setlyr.com. It helps if you mention what phone you're using and what happened (screenshots welcome). We're a small team and we genuinely read every message.
